How To Write A Children's Book - Really!

It's been a lifelong dream of mine to write and publish a children's book. And I will. I've also read numerous books on the topic, but none have inspired me quite like Cynthia Reeser's How to Write and Publish a Successful Children's Book: Everything You Need to Know Explained Simply. What sets this book apart from the others is that it really is "explained simply." So many other books seem to gloss over the actual publishing part, leaving me with more questions than ever. This book is chock-full of useful information, including self-publishing, agents, networking, even sample documents of query letters and manuscripts (sooo helpful!).

Reeser dedicates the first half of the book to writing specifically for children. There's some wonderful advice given to hone your craft and some great hands-on exercises to try. In addition there are featured "case studies" - one or two page profiles by published authors describing their experiences with writing. What I enjoyed most, however, was that the book is actually fun to read! Sometimes "How-To" books can seem a little dry and it's a struggle to get through them. In this case, everything is organized, simple to understand and written in such a way that makes for a fascinating read. With this book by my side, I really feel like this is the year my children's book will get written! Grab a copy for yourself by going here.

Also: this how-to book looks wonderful. I've considered writing a children's book for several years and I'd love to read this author's take on going to draft to publication.

  15. I homeschooled my kids (and myself)for 10 years. The creative writing edge I acquired from that experience was fun for my children and has left me with some terrific story ideas. I would love to learn how to collaborate and turn those ideas into books that I could share with other children.

  17. My mother has a number of picture books she has written. Most of them were written for me when I was a child. She's love to read this. Also when I was taking children's literature in college, we were required to write a children's book. My professor was overwhelmed with mine and told me I needed to publish it but I don't know where to start.

I love helping children in any way possible, and I believe if I had a better grasp on how to write a book specifically devoted to children, I could discuss important topics and help children! :)
