Before I had a child it seemed like in addition to the excitement, I heared people also discussing the "negative" sides to being a parent. Things like loss of freedom, changing diapers, constant crying, and an eternally messy home. I'm here to say that the positives of being a mom definitely outweigh the negatives. Here's my list of perks that you get to experience only when you become a parent:
1. Children make a fabulous excuse to leave a party that you don't want to be at. "Well, the baby has to take his nap/go to bed now. It's been great." Whether or not this is actually true is beside the point.
2. They are fascinated by the simplest things. My son is much happier with a set of tupperware than some elaborate toy. Makes you think twice about your priorities.
3. You always have somebody to spend your day with.
4. You learn to appreciate nature when you're with your child. My son points to things like flowers, insects and rocks that I never would have noticed had he not been with me.
5. You can become a kid again. To go to the playground and swing on the swings, slide down the slide, jump on a trampoline. Then to hear his infectious laugh - that's the best!
I second everything you wrote!! Being a mom is good stuff. Miss ya - take care!
ReplyDeleteI love this post! It is all so true. My favorite is the leaving the party early bit. But, wait until he can talk, the gig is up when tells everyone he already TOOK his nap, or doesn't really have soccer practice!
ReplyDeleteYou make a very convincing argument. Thanks for reminding me of all the reasons I love being a mother.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED this post! How true it is. I have a little boy and find that I enjoy the little things in life more...plus it gives me an excuse to watch cartoons again. Yea! ;)
ReplyDeleteAnother wonderful perk of motherhood is they grow up (WAY toooooooo fast) and become wonderful adults learning the important lessons of life with their own children!

If it were not for my kid, I would not be re-living my love for Star Wars. And cannon balls at the pool. And smores. And sidewalk chalk. And making forts. Kid = joy. They are the best time ever.
ReplyDeleteWell said! Your own kids--the funniest people you'll ever meet.
ReplyDeleteThanks for pointing out the positive, in you true witty fashion!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more. Well said.
ReplyDelete... and another perk about motherhood, I can be as goofy as I can be and won't worry about judgement from my child.
