My husband and I own tons of board games, but lately we just haven't been playing them all that much. I like to blame this fact on our toddler, but there really is no good excuse. So when Jishaku arrived in the mail, I plunked it down on the coffee table and forced us to play it. Turns out, it wasn't so bad...in fact we had a wonderful time playing it.
Jishaku (the Japanese word for magnet) is the kind of game that literally makes you jump out of your seat. Comprised of 18 magnetic hematite pieces (which are beautifully polished and smooth) and one cushy egg crate piece of foam, the game requires a fair amount of strategy and skill without compromising the fun. As you place your magnets on the foam board in an attempt to get rid of them all, they may suddenly connect to each other - you then have to collect those pieces and start over. The trick is to figure out which magnets repel each other and use that to your advantage.
We had a lot of fun trying to be strategic and jumping every time our magnets attracted each other. By the end of the night, we were both extremely satisfied and happy that we had decided to play the game. Next time, we won't need to be forced - bring on the Jishaku!

Reading that reminded me of the time my husband and I stayed in a hotel with a highly polished metal sink. My husband turned on the water and yelped. I laughed and laughed, then he said, okay, you try it, see how you like it. I knew it was coming, but I yelped, too! It was so funny... So, all of that story means that we'll probably jump and/or yelp playing this game. That does extend your life, right?

ReplyDeleteWe have been actively searching for games which will creatively "nudge" and reinforce our older son towards a)manual dexterity (don't BUMP things) and b)thinking things through (plan it out, see what kind of feedback you can get before you just plunk it down). THIS would work awesomely. Thanks!
