My Son's New Favorite Book

Lately my son has been saying "cat, cat!" and then running to the bookshelf, pulling out a certain book and plopping it in my lap. He does this multiple times a day. The book that has caused a sensation at our place is called Big Cat, Small Cat and it explores the fantastical world of cats. I'm a cat lover myself, so I was excited to get this book but I had no idea that my two year old would love it this much. I'm thrilled!

Big Cat, Small Cat features unique, charming illustrations by Ami Rubinger where we see just about every kind of cat from nice and mean to dirty and clean. The sing-song text is fun and my son especially loves the rhymes. The rhyming word at the end of each page is intentionally left out, encouraging your child to participate and fill in the blank. I thought this concept was clever, but I didn't expect my son to understand it right away and figured I'd have to wait a while before he would start chiming in with the missing word. Well, after only a few days of reading the book together, he started chiming in all by himself! He can pretty much complete all the sentences with the last word and he loves doing it. This is the first time he's interacted with a book this way, and I really feel he learns something every time we read it together. The underlying message of accepting those of all shapes, sizes and personalities is also wonderful. It's engaging and I know that we will be reading this one for a long, long time!

  22. That's so cute how your little one is interacting with this book. Its funny one of the bedtime counting stories we have features a cat on all the pages. And there is one page where there 7 shoes in a short straight row and later the cat is beside a rocking chair with the two characters (the human ones) of the book - chewing on the missing shoe!

I said Robbie! Where do you think he got that shoe...so he went back a few pages and took the book and just stared at this page for the longest time it was very funny. That was his favourite book for awhile. I always asked - where's the kitty - as the cat showed up somewhere on all the pages.
