My First Dessert

On Friday, the young women and young men of our church held a dessert auction to raise money for activities throughout the year. I had successfully managed to avoid the sign up sheet to make a dessert until the week before when hubby informed that he had done it on our behalf. "So, what are we going to bring?" I asked him. "Boxed brownies" he replied. I explained not so gently that if we brought those, nobody would want bid on them and they would also look pitiful next to all the other homemade delights. So I decided to take charge.

The problem was, I didn't know how to make anything besides chocolate chip cookies and I wanted something different. I flipped through some magazines with pretty pictures of desserts and came upon this:

Chocolate-vanilla swirl cheesecake with oreo crust. Looked delicious, beautiful, and besides, I can't resist cheesecake. "I'm going to make this," I announced. "Okay," said Hubby. With those good wishes, I proceeded. I hacked at and crushed oreo cookies for an hour with my plastic rolling pin. I burned the chocolate. I ran out of ingredients. Two disastrous desserts later, as well as multiple trips to the grocery store, a sticky kitchen, and a masterpiece wall painting done by my three year old, I finally had a somewhat presentable dessert:

I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out, especially for my first "real" dessert. There were some really creative and yummy desserts in attendance that night. Everybody shared with each other, which I thought was neat. A few pictures of the goodies:

It's a hamburger cake! The inner layers are fondant and chocolate.

Beautiful presentations.

Another shot of my dessert, along with some chocolate chip cookies that were seriously no joke. They were worth every penny we bid on them for. Apparently, some people thought my dessert was good too. If anybody is interested in the recipe, you can find it here. A few tips from me: Use 30 oreos, not 20 and 3 1/2 tbsp of melted butter. I also think they taste better when frozen, and they're a bit less messy too. Enjoy!

  5. Good times. I loved it when we got together. Let me guess, Jen Foote did the hamburger one? I'll have to try out your recipe, and the good thing is that I won't have to pay for it (:

  7. Wow, that hamburger cake is impressive! Yours turned out great, too! I tried a similar brownie once and my swirls just didn't cut it so I covered it up with frosting.
