Magic

"The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead. And his eyes are dimmed." - Albert Einstein

For as long as I can remember, I've been into magic. No, not Magic: The Gathering, but watching and performing magic tricks. One of my favorite television shows growing up was The Paul Daniels Magic Show. I'd watch it, utterly mesmerized and wanting to be a magician myself. I did have a few tricks up my sleeve, and I loved showing them off to family and friends.

The thing I love about magic is the wonder. I love being amazed by an illusion and then being left to imagine how it was done. I loved performing a trick and seeing the wonder in people's eyes - truly magical! On a recent trip to Vancouver, my mom indulged my fantasy and bought me a magic set, and also the magic coloring book trick that amazed me as a child. Upon returning to San Diego I've been playing around with the magic set and poring over magic instruction books. I've baffled hubby a few times and have started planning my son's future magic themed birthday party. I may be a little obsessed, but it's really fun and helps to take my mind off pregnancy sickness.

I must confess that I did look online for the solution to a trick that I have but lost the instructions for. I was actually pleasantly surprised that I couldn't find it. I did find a few other tricks that had been leaked, but for the most part it looks as if people have been doing a good job at keeping magic's secrets to themselves. On that note, if anyone knows how the "coin nest" trick works please email me.

  1. That Einstein quote applies to far more than stage magic and I thank you for sharing it.

  2. I love to watch magic show too. I'm still sad that I can't do the real magic. I love things like that. My kids would go crazy for a book like that. Hunter loves to go online and look up magic tricks. Maybe I should get him something like that too. He's into Harry Potter right now, that would make his day. Hope you're feeling better.
