Welcome to San Diego Saturday! Updated as needed, this column is where I'll provide info about noteworthy events, attractions and fun things to do around town.
The San Diego County Fair is an annual event, and is the fifth largest fair in the United States. We had only attended once, a couple of years ago and so I was excited to visit it again today! This is all my son could talk about the whole ride over:
Yes, my four year old is obsessed with the ferris wheel, and like any good fair this one did not disappoint. I, of course did not ride with him - that task was handed over to hubby.
A few rides later, we decided it was time to get some food. The San Diego County Fair is famous for its food, particularly its fried offerings. New this year was the fried Kool-Aid which I didn't get a picture of, but Hubby was brave enough to try it. Here's a look at some of the things that are offered:
Fun to look at! Bean and I however, opted for a regular hot dog. Maybe next time...I did get my mini donuts though, which are an absolute must at any fair. In addition to the unique food options, the fair offers much in the way of livestock, crafts, art and photography exhibits, competitions, shows and much more. We commented on how big and diverse it was, and how it would be fun to come for another day and really see it all. This year's theme was "Race To The Fair" and so there were many interesting car displays to look at as well. One of my favorite areas was the Creative Youth displays, which showed off children's art, writing, collections, crafts and educational projects. They were teaching magic to some kids when we got there, which I thought was neat. I was impressed by the creativity that I saw there, and they had two play areas to keep my son occupied, which was a bonus. The animals were also fun to look at. Where else can you see something like this?
Those are pigs! The Swifty Swine Racing Pigs to be exact. One pig even swam. The fair kept my baby happy the entire time - no crying at all (until we got home of course.) I think that means we'll definitely be back for more fun.
The San Diego County Fair is located at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and runs through July 4th. It is closed every Monday except for July 4th. Thank you to the Fair for providing me with complimentary passes.
I love the fair! I hope we get a chance to go this year.
ReplyDeleteThey always fry something outrageous each year, but deep fried butter is just over the top...who eats butter when it's NOT friend?! Hahaha!
ReplyDeleteI am excited to go to the Fair this year. My son is 4 and I think this is the 1st year he'll finally be able to enjoy [and WALK] around the fair so it'll be a good day.
Looks like you and your family had a good time. :)
can't wait to come to SD in August--your city is so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine how big your fair must be to be the 5th largest in the US! Sounds like you had a great time and the pig races must have been fun to watch! :-)
ReplyDeleteOnce again, I love the pics!! Who in the world would eat some of those foods?????
