Rhyming Fun

My son is on a rhyming kick. It's as if he's discovered the joys of the rhyming language and gets excited when we read books that rhyme. It wasn't too long ago that he was more interested in eating books than reading them, so this is a welcome change. One of these rhyming books that he enjoys so much is Farmer Brown and his Little Red Truck by Jean M. Cochran.

This is a wonderful little book. If I had to describe it in one word it would be "charming." The rhyme has a natural flow, the story is amusing and the pictures by Daryl Enos brilliantly capture the essence of the book. Here's an excerpt:

Old Farmer Brown went driving one day
In his little red truck with two bales of hay.
Along came a pig with a bell 'neath her chin.
She squealed and wiggled and tumbled right in.

As more and more animals are piled on to the truck, we are held in suspense until the story comes full circle and then we want to read it again. At least my son does...and I'm happy to oblige because I think this book is delightful! Cochran has written other books for children, and if they are as good as this one (which I'm sure they are), I'll be adding them to my reading list very soon!
