Welcome to San Diego Saturday! Updated as needed, this column is where I'll provide info about noteworthy events, attractions and fun things to do around town.
This post is long overdue - being pregnant is no picnic! However, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to tell you about Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center:
The mansion lies on a beautiful seven acre property and is a community and garden resource facility in National City.Their vision is to reconnect students and families to the natural environment through food, education and community engagement. What they do is incredible - local school children visit the garden weekly to learn how food is grown, how to cook it, and the benefits of eating healthy. These classes and field trips are conducted by local San Diego chefs, volunteers and members of the community.
About a month ago, we had the opportunity to attend the free Kids in the Kitchen event, which was organized by the Junior League of San Diego. I stumbled upon the event while surfing the web one day and thought it might be a fun family activity. It was fabulous! We got to tour the gardens and learn about organic fruits and vegetables, take part in a cooking demonstration, plant seeds, play games and participate in other activities. Bean loved looking at the pretty butterflies, the rooster, playing basketball and croquet, exploring the planting garden and showing off his (plastic) knife skills. The lush, gorgeous setting made me want to stay all day! Here are some pictures from the event:
Olivewood Gardens welcomes guests to tour the Learning Center every Tuesday at 10am. For more information see their website. In addition, I would highly recommend the next Kids in the Kitchen event! Check here for the 2011 dates.
Olivewood Gardens is located at 2525 N Avenue National City, CA 91950.
